Airport expansion

THE first phase of the Turks & Caicos Islands $9 million Providenciales Airport expansion is complete. The international arrivals area has been expanded, the facility is now air-conditioned, and it has a new baggage carousel, an expanded immigration/customs area and more. The final phase of this upgrade project, scheduled for completion on December 1, includes an expansion and upgrade of the domestic and international departures areas and upgrades to the international departures wing.
Tourism boosts GDP growth

EXPANSION in Providenciales' tourism and increased consumer demand has led the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to forecast a real gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of five per cent for 1998.
Visitor arrivals in 1997 amounted to 93,011, a 5.9 per cent increase over 1996, which registered 87,829 visitors. Last year 64,434 visitors (69.3 per cent of the total) came from the US.
In 1997, the number of offshore finance companies fell
by 3.1 per cent to 14, 612; the number of new licences issued for insurance
company registrations also decreased.
