Welcome to Barbuda
Antigua and Barbuda are part of the Leeward Islands and were discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. In 1632 Antigua was colonized by the English, and later the French had a brief period of control from 1666 until 1667, when it was then passed to Great Britain. They were a major naval dockyard to the British fleet in the Eastern Caribbean in the late 18th century. From 1958 until 1962 they were a member of the Federation of the West Indies. In 1967 Antigua along with Barbuda and Redonda, its dependancies, joined a free association of the Windward and Leeward Islands. Antigua and Barbuda, in 1981, achieved full independence, retaining the monarchy, as in the case of many former British colonies.
